Education minister meets campaign to save modern language A levels under threat

Theresa Villiers took a delegation to meet Education Minister, Nick Gibb, in the House of Commons last week to put the case for retention of A levels in a number of languages which are under threat of abolition. The meeting took place at the request of Michael Ellinas, Head teacher of Manor Hill Greek School which is based in Totteridge. The MP for Enfield Southgate, David Burrowes, also attended to show his support for retention of Greek A level and other languages facing possible abolition.

Villiers supports the re-establishment of All Party Parliamentary Group on Tamils

Theresa Villiers, MP for Chipping Barnet, attended the AGM of the All Party Parliamentary Group on Tamils in the House of Commons on Wednesday to show her support for re-establishing this group for the new Parliament. At the meeting, James Berry, Conservative MP for Kingston and Surbiton was elected as the new chairman of the APPG, taking over the role carried out by Lee Scott during the last Parliament.

Campaign to save Greek A Level

Theresa Villiers, MP for Chipping Barnet, has started a campaign to save the A level in Greek and stop it from being abolished by Edexcel (who set exams). She also believes it is very important to retain A levels in other languages, such as Turkish and Polish, which face the threat of abolition from the OCR exam board.

Villiers appointed to Cameron's new Cabinet

Theresa Villiers has been appointed to David Cameron's new Cabinet, continuing in her role as Secretary of State for Northern Ireland. David Cameron gave her the news at a meeting in Number 10 Downing Street on Monday and the Cabinet met for the first time on Tuesday.

Conservative Manifesto offers help for working people

Theresa Villiers has welcomed the help for hard working people set out in the Conservative Manifesto this week. After attending the launch of the manifesto in Swindon, Theresa Villiers said “Help for people who work hard and do the right thing is a top priority for the Conservatives. Our manifesto confirms that under a majority Conservative Government, there would be no increase in rates of VAT, income tax or National Insurance.”

Villiers honoured by Cypriot community

On the eve of the launch of the Conservative manifesto, Theresa Villiers, Conservative candidate for Chipping Barnet, attended an event hosted by members of the Greek Cypriot community. The evening of music was held at the Cypriot-owned Cavalier pub, in Russell Lane N20, and the renowned musician, Nikos Savvides, sang many songs about Cyprus and reminisced about life in Famagusta before the 1974 invasion.
