VILLIERS LAUNCHES DOMINO CHALLENGE AS PART OF ACTION TO BOOST CHIPPING BARNET HIGH STREET

At the weekend, Theresa Villiers, MP for Chipping Barnet, launched an attempt to break the world record for the largest number of people playing dominoes while wearing Christmas masks at The Spires Shopping Centre in Chipping Barnet. The event was organised by the High Barnet Town Team with the support of funding provided by the Mayor's Outer London Fund, designed to help boost London's High Streets.

Although the world record wasn’t broken, the event succeeded in encouraging a great number of people to visit the high street and shop at local businesses. Other activities on the day included a ‘Spot the Board Game’ challenge where shoppers had to search for board game pieces at shops throughout The Spires and High Street. Members of The Barnet Society also distributed goodie bags and entertained the children by dressing up as the characters Iggle Piggle and Upsey Daisy from the children’s programme In The Night Garden.

Theresa said, “This was a really fun day out for families. It was great to see such a buzz about the High Street and so many people supporting local businesses in the run up to Christmas. All thanks should go to the High Barnet Town Team for their hard work in making the day such a success. Particular thanks should go to Derek Epstein for dressing up as Iggle Piggle. He was a big hit with the children attending the event.”

“We’re really lucky in Chipping Barnet that we have such a dedicated team of people who are determined that the High Street continues to attract shoppers despite tough economic circumstances. They have lots more events planned for the Christmas period so I encourage everyone to visit their website www.visithighbarnet.com to find out what’s going on and to join in the fun.”

“This is a great example of the Big Society with local volunteers from the Barnet Society taking the lead in supporting our local high street with important support for the event from the Mayor’s Outer London Fund.”

High Barnet Councillor, David Longstaff added, "The dominoes match was a great start to the Christmas programme - lots of people and a great atmosphere. Next Saturday is the switching on of the Christmas lights and on the Sunday we have the Christmas Fayre from midday".
