MP for Chipping Barnet, Theresa Villiers, has urged her constituents to heed the advice of the London Fire Brigade and act safely and responsibly during the firework and bonfire season.
According to new figures released by the London Fire Brigade, the number of fires in the capital increases significantly at this time of the year. During the firework season, which typically covers Chinese New Year, Guy Fawkes Night, Diwali and New Year, firefighters receive and attend twice as many calls as on an average day, ranging from out of control bonfires to fires caused by fireworks.
Theresa said, “Fireworks can be great fun, but no one should forget that they are explosives which can lead to disastrous or even tragic consequences if used irresponsibly. Getting the right advice and acting sensibly around fireworks is vital.”
“In recent weeks I have also received a number of letters from constituents who are concerned about fireworks being used outside the regulated hours between 7am and 11pm. I hope everyone who is running fireworks events over the coming week will bear in mind their impact on neighbours and pets.”
“I would urge those planning celebrations to conform to safety and firework regulations to ensure that their bonfire night parties are remembered for all the right reasons.”
