With the publication last week of figures showing a 94% increase in unemployment in Chipping Barnet compared to 12 months ago, Theresa Villiers MP said:
"These are deeply worrying figures for my constituents. They show how hard this recession is biting in Chipping Barnet. We need urgent action to remedy the grave economic situation in order to tackle the harm and despair caused by unemployment."
"The Conservatives have set out a series of proposals to help businesses through the recession by getting credit flowing, offering tax breaks for taking on the long term unemployed and giving the smallest businesses extra time to pay their VAT bills."
"These are the kind of measures we need to tackle unemployment and get the economy on the road to recovery."
These unemployment figures were published by Nomis, an organisation run by the University of Durham on behalf of the Office for National Statistics. They show unemployment in Chipping Barnet increasing from 1002 in May 2008 to 1944 in May 2009 - a 94% increase. The figures for the borough as a whole were 3764 in May 2008 and 6812 in May 2009 - an 81% increase.
